some of my pet chores !!

the key to having a lot of pets is having a good routine to make sure everyone is happy and healthy. there are daily chores like refreshing water, feeding, spot cleaning, then "bigger" weekly chores like deep cleaning, watering the bioactive plants, etc. this is just a little glimpse of some of those chores (mostly on my crested gecko, jupiter's, enclosure because it's easier to record with it still being on the floor LOL. i really need to put it on my rack)

Noel is a Northwestern Salamander (Ambystoma gracile) who was found in a Christmas tree last year hundreds of miles from her native range!! the family who found her brought it to the local wildlife center who contacted my PI. i've been caring for little Noel for a while now since she can't be released back into the wild and she's so silly.

it's my birthday today but my gift to you is highlighting some of my favorite bugs from my insect collection with a little bit of pinning!

in my invertebrate zoology class, this was my final project for the lab section of the course :D
the assignment was to catch, pin, and identify 60 insects from at least 10 orders and 15 familys.

if you've been keeping up with my stories you know i've been caring for this little western toad for a few weeks !! he's a little educational animal that my PI keeps to teach with and he was in desperate need of an enclosure upgrade. i'll be slowly upgrading all of the lab pets' enclosures which is really fun because this is my first time exploring any amphibian husbandry !! the next couple enclosures lined up are for salamanders and i'm very excited !!!

this video kind of implies that jupiter is asking you to have coffee with her but do NOT let her fool you. she is energetic and chaotic enough without stimulants so do NOT give her caffiene. i do not endorse mixing coffee and geckos

coffee shops are my favorite places to do coding assignments for my biometry class, study taxonomy, do literature search, and write research papers because it comes with a guaranteed treat as a reward for productivity LOL. i've been getting coffee a little too much recently with the rainy weather and midterms season but it's worth the 6 dollar latte right????

the most common comments i get is wondering why hottah's eyes are so big and i'm here to confirm, that's just his face idk what you want me to do about it LOL. but in all seriousness, some morphs of western hognoses do tend to be more "bug eyed" than others. albino morphs are especially prone to having bug eyes. there doesn't seem to be any lower quality of life related to bug eyes but it's a general rule of practice to not breed hoggies with this "defect" just in case. i'm not a breeder so i'm not an expert in this but i wanted to share what i do know since so many people are curious! hottah doesn't have as extreme bug eyes as some hognoses but aparantly enough for so many people to notice !

i'm starting a little mini series where i'll show little highlights of different classes i take as a zoology major :P last quarter was my first quarter since transferring from community college so the fun courses are just beginning.

this class focused on the "squishy" inverts. i'm not much of a marine life girl but this class was fun getting to spend time with such a variety of animals that i would never usually see. i'm really lucky that i go to a school on the beach so we have access to live marine animals like this instead of preserved specimen so it made this class way more exciting. i'm definitely more excited for the second course of invert zoo because land bugs are much more my style than sea bugs. regardless, any time spent with animals is a good time

one of the most widespread and long lasting myths in tarantula keeping is that tarantulas don't drink water, or they won't use water bowls, or that tarantulas will drown in them if they have them. this myth is finally starting to leave the hobby but you'll still see this information spread on care guides and in pet stores (misleading the new keepers trying to learn).

tarantulas are animals. living, breathing animals that need water. although tarantulas get most of their moisture from the food that they eat, every tarantula i've cared for has used their free standing water dish. tarantulas have low metabolisms and don't eat often (and are known for going off feed for long periods of time) so having an option to stay hydrated in the absense of food is always a safe choice. even when they do eat, i most often see my Ts drink from their bowl right after their meal.
.
water bowls are important for more than direct hydration, too. it's also important to regulating humidity microclimates in the enclosure (which is necessary for tarantula molting, even in desert species) and for enrichment. my tarantulas come running to their bowls when i fill it up to feel the water. they clean their fangs in it (tarantulas are more clean than people give them credit for) and it gives them a different texture to feel.
.
water bowls are not as dangerous as people think. tarantulas aren't dumb, they arent going to stick their face in a bowl and forget that they're in there. as long as the bowl is an appropriate size, there is nothing to worry about. most people's solution to this fear is to use a sponge for them to drink out of but that poses way more risks as sponges harbor bacteria which can be harmful to the T. in the wild, tarantulas drink from shallow puddles, water droplets on plants, and any where else that has water so why wouldn't we allow them to explore their natural habits in captivity and mimick that as much as possible?

my trip to santa cruz island was such a highlight from last quarter!! i'm so grateful for the opportunities i've been given recently

this trip wasn't for any of my personal research projects. i just came to help gather data for a huge long term project that my PI works on. he studies salamanders so we were in search of the endemic salamander Batrachoseps pacificus (channel islands slender salamander) and Batrachoseps nigriventrus (black bellied salamander; very common slender salamander in california). B. pacificus isn't very well studied yet so we just were gathering general information on habitat and gathering more data points on where they can be found on the island. we also swabbed them for chytrid (a lethal fungal disease in amphibians that cauaes widespread losses of populations which would be especially detrimental to an endemic species on an island like this) and took standardized photos of them to gather information on their sizes, color, and morphology in general. the whole goal is just to understand the species better and how they interact with B. nigriventrus !!
.
despite the harsh field work in pouring rain at night, it was one of the most rewarding experiences and it was so magical being surrounded by nature and wildlife with no distractions or other responsibilities for a few days. i saw so many amazing animals. inverts like scorpions, milipedes, centipedes, isopods; obviously amphibians and reptiles like salamanders and lizards; mammals like island foxes and deer mice; and so many birds

i can't wait to get back in the field for my own projects

2023 has been so productive and fulfilling for me. i graduated community college with two associates degrees and multiple research posters, i got a certificate in the master herpetology course from the Amphibian Foundation, i moved with all of my pets, i started at a new school as a zoology major and began new research projects allowing me to have so mamy wonderful opportunities !! it's been a heavy year and not everything was perfect and reel-worthy LOL but i am so happy to have somewhere to share the good parts and have a community of great like-minded people. i love seeing what you've all accomplished this year and rooting for all of you !!! have a great 2024 <3<3<3

i've been trying out @reptizoo_official pocket mister for jupiter, my crested gecko, and it has been so perfect!
.
since i've been doing more field research, i've been having to leave the pets for a couple nights every once and a while and it has been my biggest source of anxiety. although most of my pets can be left to their own devices for a couple nights with little maintenance, jupiter was always my biggest concern since she needs to be misted twice a day. i wanted to have a mister that was affordable and easy to set up and store since i didn't want to use an automatic mister for her everyday (i prefer hands-on care as much as possible so animal "chores" are important to my daily routine! i just needed something for when i was gone) and the pocket mister checked off of the boxes for me

it's the cheapest reptile mister i've seen on the market (~$40) and has a variety of settings so it can be used for so many animals! it's small, easy to set up quickly, and works exactly as it's intended to. it has been such a relief knowing i can leave for a night or two and jupiter will be hydrated and happy.

happy halloween !! here are some of my oddities collection to keep it spooky. most of my oddities are from the biology lab i worked at before i transferred schools! they were getting rid of the broken skeleton displays to make room for new ones and i asked if i could have them so now my room looks like a natural history museum lol (i love it). other than the skeletons, i have a variety of bugs and other inverts that have either been gifted to me or i made them (like the scorpion frame or jumping spider in the bottle) along with some miscellaneous things like a shark egg case and dinosaur tooth! have a safe and fun halloween 🪲🎃🦴 and tell me what oddities you have because i love bones and bugs

sound up to hear jupiter "whistle" or "chirp" like a baby chick :) i appologize for the background noise. these little chirps are hard to pick up on camera. geckos are known for their ability to vocalize yet most people are still shocked to hear a little lizard scream randomly in the middle the night (you get used it). other than their loud and usually defensive barks and squeaks, crested geckos have this adorable whistling sound that sounds like a baby chick chirping. when i first heard Jupiter making this noise a long time ago, i was afraid she was wheezing and somehow gotten a respiratory infection but i was pleasantly surprised when i did a little research and observed her more. it's just another form of communication! i only hear jupiter making this noise when she is exploring and has a lot of energy. some people say this noise communicates being content and curious and i can definitely see that being the case. it's super cute and i love hearing Jupiter being a little chatty when she decides to hang out with me :)

one of the most frequent comments i get in my bioactive enclosure builds is to post updates on them after they've been lived in for a while. although i post pictures of them on my stories often, i figured i'd start making permanent posts too since not everyone sees all of my stories :). jupiter's bioactive enclosure is over a year old now and it's gone through a few changes (you can check my enclosure highlight or the enclosure build on yt to see the original version). some plants have been replaced, some have grown a ton. that's what happens with bioactive enclosures: things change!

here is a list of things that worked in this enclosure:
- substrate mix is great for my plants and cuc
- CALATHEAS are my best plant friends when it comes to tropical set ups
- clean up crew (cuc) is thriving
- jupiter is happy :)
.
things that didn't work:
- i tried the gorilla glue method for the background instead of spray foam like i normally do and it didn't work at all. there are patches missing and it's starting to peel off. i'll need to redo it soon
- i used rocks as my drainage layer because i had plenty but they are heavy and overall annoying compared to clay pebbles or other normal drainage layer materials

my dairy cow isopods eat all types of things !! veggies, fruit, other decaying plant matter, but they also love protein and i like to supply it in different ways to keep it interesting. sometimes i throw in snake shed, other times i use premade reptile pellets. i don't own an aquatic turtle but i always get free samples of @zoomedlabs aquatic turtle food at reptile expos so i make sure it doesn't go to waste by giving it to my isopods. they love it !!

in short: using gaps and cracks greatstuff spray foam, i covered the sides i wanted a background and added my hardscape (cork pieces, dried mushroom ledges, styrofoam). once fully cured, i carved the foam into a shape i was happy with. on the "foresty" side i used silicone to attach substrate onto the entire side. for the "rocky" side, i used grout mixed with play sand to cover all of the foam and give a rocky texture then i painted it with nontoxic acrylic paint to make it more realistic

first time making a framed oddity :P i just do this for fun for my own collection ! i'm obviously not a professional (as you can tell by my sewing pins instead of actual pins lol). the scorpion died of natural causes (NOT killed for the art) as she was a subject for a behavior research paper experiment that was conducted a couple semesters ago. if any scorpions died while they were in captivity during this time, my professor allowed me to take them home to practice my pinning! if you are interested in watching me pin a bigger species, there is a video on my yt channel in my bio ! i'm really proud of how this turned out even if it isn't perfect

styx is my nice leopard gecko too.... you might notice her eyes are closed in these pictures and that's because she's super light sensitive and it was her first time being outside with such bright light. i would bite someone too if i couldn't see. both her and nebula (my other all white leo) seem to be light sensitive which makes me not want to give them a bioactive enclosure (with uvb, halogen light, and a plant light all causing it to be pretty bright). at first i thought as long as there is enough cover for her to be out of the light it would be fine but now i'm still considering it !

meet cayenne! my female P. johnsoni. she is also pretty yellow compared to the normal morph of Johnson's so i'm hoping she will mate with saffron and have beautiful yellow slings :P she isn't mature just yet but i'm hoping the next molt she will be :)

cygnus has been the most happy in his big new enclosure.. not so new anymore but he's still just as curious as when he moved in :P

i'm so proud of this enclosure!! it's the largest bioactive i've built and the background took 5 cans of spray foam but it was so worth it!! there is a video of the build on my yt if you are curious along with an enclosure review of the pvc enclosure i used for it (@tamuradesigns ) :D

iris is already growing out of her last enclosure upgrade !! she's growing so fast i can't wait for her to be full grown. the bigger she gets the more personality she has. it's so cute. she's one of my favorites to feed now since she politely grabs the food from me. velvet spiders definitely deserve more credit in the cute spider community

styx has been having a hard time shedding her nose which is so strange because she loves her humid hide more than any of my leos (i think she just likes the attention when i have to help her ;) lol) this picture was taken last month when she had a little scab on her nose from a shed. it's better now of course and she's been more successful with her sheds recently !!
